Udaan Sew Samiti – Let Every Child Fly

Udaan Sew Samiti was born in 2006 out of a simple yet powerful dream—to ensure that every child, no matter where they come from, gets the chance to learn, grow, and lead a life of dignity. It all began when a group of 6-7 passionate and determined young professionals made the bold choice to leave a well-known organization in Allahabad. United by a shared concern for the children they saw living and working on the streets, they came together to create something of their own: Udaan.

After a ground-level survey, the team decided to start working directly with children living in slum areas like Sadiapur, Gau Ghat, and Kareli—many of whom were rag pickers. These children had never been to school, and their days were spent collecting waste to help support their families. But what the team saw in them was potential—and a quiet hunger to learn.

Udaan began with non-formal education (NFE) centres—safe spaces where children could take a break from the harshness of daily life and begin learning to read, write, and imagine new possibilities. Slowly and patiently, the team worked to build trust—not just with the children, but with their families too. It wasn’t easy. Convincing parents to let their children spend a few hours learning instead of earning required deep conversations, compassion, and persistence.

But the effort was worth it. One by one, the children began to take their first steps into school. Watching groups of boys and girls walking to class in uniform, carrying school bags for the first time, was more than just a milestone—it was a moment of quiet transformation.

Yet the journey didn’t stop there. The team soon realized that many of these newly enrolled children were dropping out. Without ongoing support, they struggled to keep up and slowly slipped back to the streets. That’s when Udaan adapted its approach—starting supplementary education classes in the evenings to help children stay in school, cope with studies, and continue progressing.

Over the years, Udaan Sew Samiti has grown into a trusted name in education-focused grassroots work in Allahabad. Today, we not only help out-of-school children get enrolled, but also ensure they stay enrolled. Our work includes:

  • Non-formal education centres to prepare out-of-school children for formal schooling
  • Supplementary classes for school-going children to prevent dropouts
  • Counseling and community engagement to work with families and create long-term change
  • Linking children with government services and scholarships
  • Support for girls’ education and youth development

What makes Udaan special is not just the work we do, but how we do it—with heart, with humility, and always with the child at the centre.

We believe that education is more than just textbooks. It’s about giving children the courage to dream, the tools to build, and the wings to fly.
